The monumental Church of San Francesco has contained art works from important church buildings from the Mercatello area since 1926, the year in whichthe important restoration works begun at the turn of the century were completed, restoring the primitive simplicity of Franciscan architecture to the church. The Museum of San Francesco, opened in 1977, now presents brand new displays that cover the whole monastery building, which serves for exhibition use. The exhibition route passes through the charming architectural spaces and sums up the centuries of historic and artistic heritage created in this extraordinarily rich area: frescos, panels, canvases, ivory, gold and jewellery, sculptures, liturgical items, and also a section dedicated to architecture. We should point out the paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, including a large cross by Giovanni da Rimini and a polyptych by Baronzio, both from the School of Giotto in Rimini.
